Jérémie was the first to awake. Both of them were lying silently at the bottom of the lake. He raised himself half up and surveyed his surroundings; on one side, flowers bloomed in profusion, in a myriad of colours. Lillie, unconscious, lay buried in the flowers; it seemed as if she was asleep, or as if she wasn't breathing. Jérémie slowly approached her, and put his ear to her heart. He was met by the sweet sound of her heartbeat.
"....thank goodness..."
He sighed in relief, and after gazing intently at her face, he reached his hand out towards Lillie's hair. As he gently stroked it, Lillie opened her eyes.
"I'm sorry. I......"
Jérémie sealed Lillie's pale pink lips with his finger.
"You're not the one who should apologise. Nothing more needs to be said; just look into my eyes."
This was perhaps the first time the two had looked at each other with such warmth between them. It suddenly occured to Jérémie that this may be what true happiness is. Lillie too was thinking; this was what she had been wishing for.
Time was forgotten in this passionate exchange. With their palms together, fingers entwined, and bodies wrapped intensely around each other, in the distant heavens the moon prepared to depart.
